Orchids Care and Varieties

 Everyone seems to love the Orchid whether in  flower arrangements, corsages or as cut flower arrangements.  Orchids care, maintenance and propagation can be a very rewarding challenge. Orchids come in a variety of colors and sizes ranging from light green, white and pink to darker shades of pink, purple, yellow and orange.

Orchids care involves providing the proper light, soil mix, water and humidity. Orchids have been evolving for many millions of years and grow in a wide variety of environments from tropical and sub-tropical grasslands and rain forests but the care of the many species is very similar.

There are many different varieties of orchids, being in the largest family of plants. The most commonly grown as houseplants are Phalaenopsis, dendrobium, vanda, paphiopedilum, and cymbidium.

Phalaenpsis orchids are from Asia, Philippines and Australia. They are an epiphytic plant and prefer to be protected from direct sun and can tolerate a wide range of temperature and humidity. Dendrobium orchids are another species with the same renge as Phalaenopsis, they are also epiphtic and develope a psuedobulb. They have rapid summer growth and take a winter rest and bloom on the previous seasons growth. The Cymbidium orchid is a very popular variety because of it wide range of colors including red, pink, yellow, brown, white, and green.
